Walking barefoot through the streets of Mbale. Jazz on my iPod, blocking out the cacophony of morning. Freedom for my feet. Whispers behind my back. This is something unthinkable: A white man walking barefoot? What has happened? «Hey, muzungu, where are your shoes?» So many of my friends walk around with no shoes. Why can’t I? But there is a difference. I chose to leave my shoes behind today. My friends have no choice. Poverty is lack of opportunity. Poverty is the lack of freedom to choose whether or not to put your shoes on. As long as there is poverty, there is no freedom.
